A Roopu of Māori Agribusinesses, Halal experts, and associated individuals got together with funding from New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries Māori Agribusiness and Extension (MABx) to create a Tikanga-Halal relationship, Trade and Economic Development Platform (the Platform). The Platform was later named 'Indigenous Islamic Trade Waka' (The Trade Waka).

The Trade Waka is designed to empower those involved to generate more business and thereby enhance economic development for all parties - as well as those they represent and serve.
