There is no international standard that defines the term grass/pasture fed. In New Zealand, grass/pasture-fed means that the animals have been raised under normal New Zealand farming conditions with year-round access to grass (hay, silage, lucerne, feed crops) and other supplementary feeds (including manufactured feeds). This means that all dairy cows have daily access to pasture all year-round, except when it is necessary to temporarily remove cows from pasture (e.g. due to milking, environmental conditions, regulatory compliance, veterinary advice and transportation).

This report includes a literature review on environmental and nutritional aspects, dairy companies’ declaration (or statements) associated with grass-fed.

Report number: 12403
