Exploring the use of biochar to enhance sustainable land use and contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of pastoral systems

<p dir="ltr">Biochar is a type of charcoal produced by heating organic material above 250oC in a low oxygen environment (pyrolysis). Biochar can contribute to soil carbon (C) sequestration, mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from soils, improve soil structure and nutritional status. In New Zealand, benefits of biochar application have been evaluated mostly under controlled conditions or at the plot scale in field trials, with no evaluations at the paddock or whole farm scale.</p><p dir="ltr">The project included the establishment of a baseline for biochar generation and use, assessing its potential benefits and the environmental impacts associated with all stages from production to field application.</p><p dir="ltr">Report Number: RE450/2025/046</p>
