Development of rapid proxy measures for use in the selection of cattle to breed for lowered enteric methane emissions

The main objectives of the program were to explore predictors of enteric methane emissions from livestock. The primary purpose of these predictors is to accelerate genetic gain in lowering methane emissions per unit of feed intake. The biggest lever for increasing gain is measuring sufficient numbers, so predictors are required that are rapid, low cost and can be measured in young animals prior to selection decisions
