To explore what a circular economy means for New Zealand agriculture. A circular economy is designed to overcome such issues as climate change and other global challenges, like biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. Rather than just focusing on uses for waste, we design food systems to reduce the requirements for inputs of harmful or limited raw materials throughout supply chains, increase the proportion of renewable inputs or reuse of waste streams from other supply chains. We increase the efficiency in which inputs are turned into high value products and by-products. Any remaining material is then recycled or repurposed to its greatest use, and harmful emissions to air, land and water are minimised.
