Scenario design of New Zealand future agriculture

online resource
posted on 2024-09-04, 04:18 authored by University of Canterbury Civil & Natural Resources Engineering, Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research

We have developed a simple decision-support tool that is the first to represent the whole agricultural system of New Zealand at the national scale.

The originality of the model is to bring together all the sectors of production, their market value, land and water use, energy and fertiliser consumptions, and emissions. The model aims to quantify agricultural outputs related to resilience, sustainability and profitability (for example, carbon emissions and offset consequences, irrigation water use, water quality as influenced by land use, technology, and agricultural production value).

The linked page includes a video tutorial for using the model.

Funding

Funded by the New Zealand Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment’s Our Land and Water National Science Challenge (Toitū te Whenua, Toiora te Wai), as part of the project Future Scenarios for Arable Agriculture
