Theileria orientalis (Ikeda)-associated bovine anaemia (TABA) has been confirmed in a 188-cow dairy herd on the West Coast of the South Island. The outbreak on the West Coast marks an extension of the TABA epidemic into the South Island. We conclude that a small, patchy, local population of ticks (either in Canterbury or on the West Coast) infected with Ikeda transmitted infection to this herd.
