Wool carpet has been shown to have better slip resistance than dry varnished wood flooring, but slightly less resistance than dry vinyl. However, carpet, being softer, cushions any falls, significantly reducing the potential for injury. When vinyl and varnished wood were wet with soapy water, the slip resistance decreased dramatically, greatly increasing the potential for slipping. Cut pile carpets have higher friction coefficients than loop pile ones, and are therefore particularly suited for locations where high traction is important, such as stairs. It is well known that in addition to having good ergonomics for walking and standing, carpets are highly slip resistant. Tests in our laboratories have given new insights into this important property of wool carpets, one which directly benefits health and wellbeing.
