The New Zealand deer industry is relatively new and at a different developmental stage from other farming industries. Genetic improvement has only been adopted in the past couple of decades, but deer farmers have demonstrated a significant appetite for the uptake of onfarm genomic tools such as Deer Select, a database for performance recorded animals that delivers breeding values, as a measure of generic worth.
Deer farmers are utilising AgResearch’s Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) parentage test.
