Determining host control of rumen microbial profiles in deer

Download (1.5 MB)

Background – Ruminants and Rumen Microbial Community

  • Ruminants are mammals with four stomach compartments: Rumen largest compartment; Assist in fermentation of feed and digestion
  • The rumen microbial community (RMC) is a collection of microorganisms: RMC assist the host in digestion and other life processes
  • Very little is known about deer RMC
  • RMC heritability ranges from 0.1-0.4 h2 in ruminants
  • Annotation of microbial genomes constantly being improved and added to databases
  • 10,000 samples collected including deer
