- Ruminants are mammals with four stomach compartments: Rumen largest compartment; Assist in fermentation of feed and digestion
- The rumen microbial community (RMC) is a collection of microorganisms: RMC assist the host in digestion and other life processes
- Very little is known about deer RMC
- RMC heritability ranges from 0.1-0.4 h2 in ruminants
- Annotation of microbial genomes constantly being improved and added to databases
- 10,000 samples collected including deer
